My Civ. Pro. exam is this coming Tuesday morning. And, in honor of my studying, I would like to share the following quote with you...
"If there is a hell to which disputatious, uncivil, vituperative lawyers go, let it be one in which the damned are eternally locked in discovery disputes with other lawyers of equally repugnant attributes." -A US Court
In that hell, interpretation of the Erie doctrine will also be endless.
Oh Civ. Pro., how every 1L in every law school ever survives you, I am not sure. I guess on Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. I will know.

Don't Eat the Apple, Eve
"God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; Courage to change the things I can; And wisdom to know the difference..."
I keep getting beat over the head with the same message: Let go and let God.
Yesterday at approximately 5:40 p.m. I finally got my car back from the body shop. Yesterday sometime between 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. my computer crashed.
With one week to go before exams start, that was... to say the least... very bad.
I spent most of my morning in the Apple store and was given an expected "all-better" date of three to five days. Unacceptable when there is studying, outlining and note-taking left to be done. I was planning on buying a new computer anyway, so that's what I did. I've got a brand new spiffy MacBook Pro. Whoo hoo!
In other good news... the Apple geniuses surprised themselves (and me) and fixed my old computer in less than 24 hours. I picked it up before closing tonight and now my two lovely computers are having a data-transfer date.
Thank you for praying for me, St. Jude. I really am a hopeless case.
So here I go... again. Surrendering... again. How appropriate that it's Holy Week. May my suffering be united with Christ's Passion. And may my semester grades be joined with his Resurrection and Ascension.
"...Living one day at a time; Enjoying one moment at a time; Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace; Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it; Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His Will; That I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him forever in the next." -Reinhold Niebuhr

Soul Mates
"Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words." -Robert Frost
"Love Song" by Rainer Maria Rilke
How shall I hold on to my soul, so that
it does not touch yours? How shall I lift
it gently up over you on to other things?
I would so very much like to tuck it away
among long lost objects in the dark
in some quiet unknown place, somewhere
which remains motionless when your depths resound.
And yet everything which touches us, you and me,
takes us together like a single bow,
drawing out from two strings but one voice.
On which instrument are we strung?
And which violinist holds us in the hand?
O sweetest of songs.
it does not touch yours? How shall I lift
it gently up over you on to other things?
I would so very much like to tuck it away
among long lost objects in the dark
in some quiet unknown place, somewhere
which remains motionless when your depths resound.
And yet everything which touches us, you and me,
takes us together like a single bow,
drawing out from two strings but one voice.
On which instrument are we strung?
And which violinist holds us in the hand?
O sweetest of songs.
"A poem begins with a lump in the throat." -Robert Frost

April Showers
"I am sure it is a great mistake always to know enough to go in when it rains. One may keep snug and dry by such knowledge, but one misses a world of loveliness." -Adeline Knapp
Have you ever watched the rain? I did tonight as I stood washing dishes at my kitchen sink. A semi-sheer white sheet streamed from the infinitely gray sky to the ground. The grass looked muted, my neighbor's house look muted, everything looked muted. Quiet. Except for the rain. It was lovely. I decided that a thunderstorm is nature's ironic mute button. It is so powerful and consuming that everything else fades in comparison.
Standing at that window by the sink, I could finally catch my breath from the day's long studies and classes. The rain. The rain. The rain. It was washing everything, even the back corners of my mind.
I hope it keeps raining through tonight.
I love falling asleep to the roll of thunder and the pitter-patter of rain drops. It's a comforting symphony. Nature sings us all to sleep with her deep voice. Think about it. When it's not raining we hear the crunch of wheels on pavement, the tinny noise of radio music or nothing at all.
I do not think any of those are more desirable than the rain. Do you?
"Anyone who says sunshine brings happiness has never danced in the rain." -Author Unknown

Moments
"What you need to know about the past is that no matter what has happened, it has all worked together to bring you to this very moment. And this is the moment you can choose to make everything new. Right now." -Author Unknown
We've all played the "What if?" game.
I played it again this afternoon.
What if I had forgotten something in Publix and had to go back inside? What if I had tried on one more dress in Target? What if I had decided to study at home this afternoon? What if I had spoken to Andrea for a few more minutes at the Frassati House? What if the Honda Civic had decided to go straight instead of turning? What if I had turned two seconds later?
But I didn't forget something in Publix. I didn't try on one more dress. I didn't study at home, and I didn't prolong my conversation with Andrea. The Honda Civic decided to turn, and I turned at an exact moment in time.
Crash. An excellent "connectedness" movie. (Though a bit crude and graphic at times.) Events happen in a certain order. And once they have occurred, no one can change them. We only go on to the next event, the next moment and decide what we will do with it.
Fortunately, we do not face that future that becomes the present with each passing tick of the clock empty handed. We bring our past with us -- The knowledge, experiences, heartaches and joys. We are armed with our past so that we may have the strength to face the future.
I was reminded of this scene from The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
So, here I am. Updating my blog for the first time in nearly a month. My car is in the shop with a dented bumper and misaligned wheel. But... I am not in the hospital, it was a sunny day and my friend Meg has the release party for her first EP tonight! Joy.
Here's to the moment right now, the moments I will spend with friends tonight, and whatever tomorrow may bring.
I hope you're having a good one. Peace.
"The past is our definition. We may strive, with good reason, to escape it, or to escape what is bad in it, but we will escape it only by adding something better to it." -Wendell Berry
